How to Avoid Heat Loss this Winter

Keeping your home heated in the winter is essential for overall comfort. It’s also vital to keep your home warm to prevent frozen pipes and high energy bills. Unfortunately, heat can escape your home through a leak in the attic, faulty windows, or cracks around door frames. So, if you’re looking for ways to avoid heat loss this winter, Centennial Construction & Remodeling Services, Inc. has some tips for you.

Seal the Chimney

A fireplace can be a great source of heat and warmth for your home. However, if you’re not using your chimney, heat pumped out by the furnace can easily escape through your flue. So, when your chimney is not in use, install a removable balloon that won’t allow heat to escape. If you don’t plan on using your chimney at all, then you might want to consider a cap and close it off for the winter. This will prevent a draft from coming down the chimney and will keep heat in your home.

Draft-Proof the Windows

Heat loves to escape your home through the windows. If you have an older home with older windows, then you’ll want to be extra vigilant in sealing cracks this winter. There are plenty of draft-proof strippings that you can use around old windows to keep the cold air out and the warm air in. Furthermore, sealing up these cracks will also guarantee you don’t waste energy and experience higher utilities this winter.

Hang Heavy-Duty Curtains

Curtains are a great way to keep heat in and the cold air out. So, it’s time to swap those spring and summer curtains for more heavy-duty, thick curtains for winter. Some brands even make curtains with thermal linings, trapping heat before it can escape your home. They’ll also absorb the heat from the winter sun, helping keep your home’s interior nice and cozy, no matter the temperature outside.
